Early Childcare Assistant (Internship)


This course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively work with infant, toddler, preschool, and school-aged children. Through participation in this course, students will gain an understanding of the personal development, social development and health and safety needs associated with children in the early years.

Students will be prepared to provide support, encouragement, and self esteem to children as they develop. In addition, through a practicum placement students will benefit from hands on experience in a childcare facility where they will have the opportunity to apply the theories and concepts of child development that they have learned though out the course.

Students participating in this program will explore the historical roots of child care, child growth, and development.

They will gain an understanding of how to create an environment based on children's interests and learning needs that will contribute significantly to a child's development. Through study and practical application, students will experience the difference that an Early Childhood Assistant can make in the lives of young children and their families.

  • Guide and assist children in developing proper eating, dressing and toilet habits
  • Discuss progress and problems with children at staff meetings
  • Maintain day care equipment and assist in housekeeping duties
